What equipment do I need for a Moss Safari?

Basic equipment required

  • Light compound microscope with x10- x100 objectives
  • Microscope glass slides, ideally with a concave well.
  • Glass coverslips
  • Small trays such as empty margarine tubs, small dessert dishes
  • A camera (smart phone, microscope camera or other)

Additional equipment

  • Plastic Pasteur pipettes
  • Small funnel
  • Filter papers
  • Jam jars or small beakers
  • Mineral water (not tap water)
  • Tissue for spills

A source of moss

You find moss in most environments. Look in the corners of pavements, between patio slabs, on roofs (look for bits fallen down on the ground), on tree bark, on the walls of houses, amongst the grass in the park.

You only need a small piece, about the size of a thumbnail to do a good Moss Safari.
