Sat 29 Jan 2022 Association for Science Education Annual Conference (online)

1 hour introduction, live moss safari and discussion with science educators

The Moss Safari is a session that introduces trainee teachers to the microorganisms that inhabit moss using the ‘safari approach’. With ‘Big Five’ guide sheets of what to look out for, using a microscope, and the KS3 & KS4 curriculum links, trainee teachers were inspired to take this activity into their own classrooms. In this session I will share with you the resources and the empirical data from a case study of using the Moss Safari in teacher training.

26 Jan 2022 Surrey & Sussex Science Learning Partnership (Primary)

1 hour online introduction for primary teachers

Moss Safari: Imagine going on a safari, but in the microscopic world. Ordinary moss is full of animals and plants that are too small to see with the naked eye. On Moss Safari children will learn to identify the ‘Big Five’ animals they can see at low magnifications, along with a whole host of amazing animals and plants. There are a host of curriculum opportunities including adaptations, food chains, ecology and working scientifically. In this session Andy will take you on a live virtual Moss Safari and introduce you to the wonders and educational opportunities.
