Join a live Moss Safari Online: Moss Safari Monthly

A live, guided journey into the microscopic life of moss

Before we start this blog, some news. Kind of a good news, bad news scenario. Good news: The Moss Safari book is selling really well. Bad news, so well that the publishers have run out! It’s back at the printers and is due back in late February (early March). I have a handful of copies at home that I can sign if you order one. Otherwise it’s a six week wait.

Now for the latest venture!

Join Moss Safari Monthly, a one-hour live online Moss Safari running on the (usually) fourth Wednesday of each month from February to June 2026. Dip in as you can, or follow the whole journey, as we return to the same moss habitat each month to observe how life changes across the seasons.

Moss Safari Monthly is led by an experienced science communicator and educator, combining live microscopy, current scientific understanding, and a sense of awe at the overlooked ecosystems beneath our feet.

Purpose

Moss is an often unnoticed ecosystem. This series reveals that hidden world to a lay audience, building understanding across five sessions by revisiting the same moss source each month. Expect discovery, careful noticing, and plenty of surprises.

What to expect

Session dates (7:00–8:00pm, London/UK time):

  • Wednesday 25 February 2026
  • Wednesday 25 March 2026
  • Wednesday 22 April 2026
  • Wednesday 20 May 2026 (Note 3rd Wednesday, not 4th – to avoid half-term)
  • Wednesday 24 June 2026

Each session follows a clear, relaxed structure:

  • Briefing and scene-setting
  • Review of the previous session, connecting observations over time
  • A 30-minute live Moss Safari, exploring three prepared slide samples
  • Guided discussion and questions (10-20 minutes)

By revisiting the same moss source, the series offers a rare opportunity to compare, contrast, and notice patterns of change, persistence, and surprise. It is part discovery, part reflection, and part gentle citizen science.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this series for?

Moss Safari Monthly is for anyone interested in the natural world. Moss is an often unnoticed ecosystem, and Moss Safari reveals this enchanting microscopic world to a lay audience, guided by an experienced science communicator.

Is Moss Safari Monthly suitable for families and children?

The sessions are suitable for families to watch together. They can be considered PG-rated, and parental supervision is recommended. From time to time, there may be scientific descriptions of reproductive systems and strategies, discussed appropriately and in an educational context.

Is any prior scientific knowledge needed?

No prior scientific knowledge is required. Sessions are designed to be as accessible as possible and are pitched at approximately GCSE / secondary school level. There are opportunities to ask questions and explore ideas at your own pace.

Do I need my own microscope or equipment?

No. You can take part fully without a microscope. If you do have one, you may feel inspired to use it after the session, and you are very welcome to share what you discover.

Is this an interactive session or more of a talk?

The first 40 minutes are guided narration and live microscopy. The final 10-20 minutes are dedicated to questions and discussion. Participants are welcome to add comments and questions in the chat throughout.

What happens if I miss a session?

All sessions are recorded. You will have access to the recordings of the sessions you have signed up for after each event.

How scientific are the sessions?

The sessions are scientifically grounded but designed for a general audience. The aim is to make science engaging and accessible to anyone with an interest in the natural world.

Will topics such as reproduction or life cycles be discussed?

Yes, where relevant. Life cycles, food chains, ecological interactions, and reproductive strategies may be discussed depending on what we observe. These topics are covered scientifically and sensitively, at a level comparable to a secondary school science classroom.

Is this a teaching course or a more informal experience?

This is an informal, guided experience that you can watch at leisure. While you should expect to learn, the emphasis is on curiosity, observation, and enjoyment rather than formal instruction.

How long is each session?

Each session lasts one hour.

What platform will the sessions run on?

Sessions run on Zoom. Joining details will be sent ahead of each session.

Will recordings be available?

Yes. Recordings of the sessions you have signed up for will be available to watch afterwards.

Is there a discount for booking the full series?

Yes. Booking all five sessions includes a £10 discount, and you will also receive a 10% discount code for Moss Safari merchandise.

Are places limited?

Yes. Sessions are limited to 25 participants to ensure everyone has the opportunity to interact and ask questions if they wish.

Is this linked to the Moss Safari book or other events?

Yes. There is a strong alignment with the Moss Safari book and other Moss Safari events, although the sessions also stand alone as complete experiences.

Is this suitable for teachers or educators?

Absolutely. The sessions are particularly well suited to teachers and educators who would like inspiration and insight to run their own Moss Safari activities with students.
